Must See Destinations Bucket List #3: Egypt

If Egypt is on your bucket list of must-see destinations, you will for sure be eager to start planning to check it off of your list after reading this. Egypt is such a beautiful country with kind people and a rich culture. The sight of beautiful infrastructures, the history, the sand, the Nile River, the smell of delicious food, and the helpfulness of the Egyptian people will leave you star struck.

The Giza Pyramid Complex

Take a vacation to Egypt and prepare to be amazed with awesome, ancient wonders. One of Egypt’s many awesome must-see sights, The Giza Pyramid Complex, is located on the outskirts of Cairo. Thanks to history books and television, we have an idea of what the pyramids look like, but there simply is no comparison to seeing them in person. The Giza Pyramid Complex, comprised of the Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx of Giza, is said to be large enough to be identifiable from the Space Station. UNBELIEVABLE! Scientists estimate that it took about 20,000 workers about 20 years to build the pyramids of Giza. The Pyramid of Khufu, also referred to as The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest and oldest of the pyramids in The Giza Pyramid Complex and the last surviving monument of the Seven Wonders of the World. The sides of the Pyramid of Khufu’s base averages over 755 feet, and 454 feet high (down from its original height of over 481 feet), making it the largest pyramid in the world! In fact, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years.

The Karnak Temple

A short plane ride from Cairo takes you to the city of Luxor, home to the most-visited attractions in Egypt second to The Giza Pyramid Complex, Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple Complex. It’s no wonder these are highly-visited attractions. The Karnak Temple Complex, which is a mix of vast temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings, is the second largest ancient religious site IN THE WORLD! Located on the east bank of the Nile River, the Temple of Luxor, is a large ancient Egyptian temple complex built in 1400 BC. Can you imagine being in the presence of a structure from 1400 BC!!! Simply amazing!!!

Where Cairo is busy and overwhelmed by locals and a tourist population, the city of Luxor welcomes you with fairly empty, quiet streets. The city of Luxor with its many tombs and temples has been labeled as the biggest open-air museum in the world. Vacationers can easily get around Luxor by taxi or by horse-drawn carriage, a great option that can make your visit to Luxor extra special.

Close to the city of Luxor is the world’s longest and famous Nile River. The calm aura of the Nile River is relaxing and provides front-row views of historical sights. Cruising the Nile River during sunset is the perfect ending to a day of sightseeing. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. There just isn’t anything else like it in the world.

For Peacock Travel Agency, a vacation isn’t complete without visiting a beautiful beach and Egypt isn’t any different. Clear blue water, warm sun, and soft sand are the makings for the perfect beach experience and Egypt delivers. One of Egypt’s most famous beaches, Naama Bay, is a white-sand beach at Egypt's finest resort, Sharm el-Sheikh, located on the Sinai Peninsula. Here you can splash around in the aqua-blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and see the silhouette of Saudi Arabia's mountainous coastline. Naama Bay is known primarily for scuba diving because of its multitude of coral reefs and underwater activities.

For a more casual and local beach, a visit to Dahab Beach can fit the bill. Dahab Beach has a mix of rocky and sandy areas. It is best known as Egypt’s top destination for learning how to dive (due to the rocky areas) and the perfect place for backpacking. The lagoon area is especially for travelers who want to have a lazy day on the beach. But if you are feeling active, it also offers many activities such as diving and kitesurfing. An added benefit of Dahab Beach is it is near cafes and restaurants that have breathtaking views.

Speaking of cafes and restaurants, the food in Egypt will leave you wanting more and more. A must-try dish is Kushari. It is a mix of rice, lentils, macaroni, spiced tomato sauce, chickpeas, crispy onions, and garlic juice. Many Egyptians consider Kushari as their national dish. This dish goes all the way back to the mid-19th century and carries a ton of Egyptian culture. Kushari is sure to satisfy any craving for authentic Egyptian food!
